License types

MonolixSuite provides a range of licensing options tailored for individual users, collaborative teams, centralized infrastructures, and high-performance computing environments. These licenses cover the three main MonolixSuite applications: PKanalix, Monolix, and Simulx (applications are licensed separately), the R package for study design evaluation called mlxDesignEval, with an additional cluster-specific license for Monolix. Datxplore, mlxEditor and Sycomore can be used without a license.

1. Named User License

The Named User License is assigned to a specific individual.

  • Usage: Only the designated user is permitted to use the software.

  • Installation: May be installed on max. 2 machines (e.g., desktop and laptop), but only the named user may access it. The license file is generated via an activation key.

  • Ideal for: Individual researchers needing personal, dedicated access.

  • Management: If the designated user leaves the company or changes his laptop, it is possible to re-assign the named user license upon request to Simulations Plus.

2. Floating License

The Floating License supports multiple users with concurrent usage limits, based on tokens. When a user opens the Monolix interface or initialize the lixoftConnectors, a token is taken. When the Monolix interface is closed or the R session is closed, the token is released and another user can take it. The tokens work separately for Monolix, Simulx and PKanalix: with one floating license, one user can use Monolix while another user uses Simulx at the same time.
The floating license is available in two configurations:

a. Self-Hosted Floating License

  • Deployment: The RLM license server is installed and managed by the customer on their internal network. The MonolixSuite can be installed on as many machines as needed. The machines on which MonolixSuite is installed must be able to communicate with the RLM license server. The license file is generated via an activation key.

  • Access Control: Any user within the organization can access the software, up to the number of available concurrent licenses (tokens).

  • Ideal for: IT-managed environments with internal license infrastructure.

b. Simulations Plus-Hosted Floating License

  • Deployment: RLM license server hosted by Simulations Plus. The MonolixSuite can be installed on as many machines as needed. The machines on which MonolixSuite is installed must have internet access. The license file is provided by Simulations Plus.

  • Access Control: Users connect over the internet to access the RLM server which handles the tokens.

  • No local setup required: Simplifies deployment, especially for distributed teams.

  • Ideal for: Organizations looking for a low-maintenance, cloud-managed license system.

3. MPI License (Monolix Only)

The MPI (Message Passing Interface) License enables parallel computing capabilities in Monolix, designed for cluster or HPC environments.

  • Function: Speeds up estimation by distributing computation across multiple cluster nodes.

  • Compatibility: Only available for Monolix, and must be combined with an existing server or floating license.

  • Ideal for: Power users and institutions needing scalable, high-performance model fitting.
